You might have noticed that coffee calms you down or makes you drowsy while everyone around you gets a visible boost from it. This means your brain may be responding to the stimulant the way ADHD brains often do — by settling down and chilling out.
Stimulants in ADHD can reduce internal noise enough for the person to rest. This applies to prescribed stimulants too.
A prospective study of 149 adults with ADHD found that stimulant use was associated with improved sleep quality and reduced odds of insomnia.1 Polysomnography studies have shown improvement in sleep patterns during stimulant treatment in ADHD adults. In one trial of long-acting methylphenidate, the proportion of good sleepers rose from 26% to 57% over six months of treatment.
Caffeine is a much weaker stimulant than methylphenidate, but it operates on the same principle: raising dopamine availability in circuits that, in ADHD, may be running too low to let the brain settle.
You might have your own experience with this. Maybe you noticed an afternoon coffee lets you take a power nap, or an evening cup takes the edge off by calming racing thoughts at bedtime. Coffee is often doing mild regulatory work that a prescribed stimulant would do more reliably.
Is coffee making you sleepy a symptom of ADHD?
Coffee making you sleepy, however, is not a surefire way to tell if someone has ADHD. (It would be a very fun diagnostic process if it worked this reliably. Let’s all go on a coffee meetup and whoever dozes off in the corner leaves with a diagnosis! 😀 )
Because coffee can also make non-ADHDers sleepy, but for different reasons.
With sustained use, the adenosine system adapts. The brain produces more adenosine receptors, and the same dose of coffee that used to sharpen focus now merely prevents withdrawal grogginess. Your morning coffee can end up relieving overnight withdrawal rather than providing any boost above baseline. For heavy or long-term caffeine users, sleepiness after coffee may reflect this adaptation rather than the paradoxical calming effect stimulants can do on ADHD brains. This applies to anyone who drinks coffee regularly, ADHD or not.
Both explanations can apply to the same person at different points. If your response to caffeine has always been different from the people around you, that can be a clue about how your brain handles stimulants.
