Hyperfocus is a cognitive state characterized by an intense concentration and absorption in a particular task or activity to the point of excluding or neglecting other stimuli or responsibilities.
It is often associated with ADHD. In a hyperfocused state, individuals can exhibit an extraordinary level of focus, persistence, and immersion in a single activity, sometimes losing track of time and surroundings. It can feel like you’re in the zone or a flow state and be extremely productive and enjoyable. Time seems to stop and nothing exists just you and the thing you are currently immersed in.
While hyperfocus can be valuable for productivity and achievement in certain situations, it can also lead to difficulties in shifting attention, multitasking, and maintaining a balanced focus. It is important to recognize both the benefits and challenges of hyperfocus and develop strategies to manage and harness this intense concentration for optimal well-being.
When you have an intense interest in a topic or area for a prolonged time (weeks, months, or even years), that is sometimes called hyperfixation.
